The Green Guard Asparagus Crate Label, a unique piece of advertising, was crafted by K.R. Nutting Co. out of Salinas, California, in the 1950s. Its distinct design and historical significance, serving as a window to the past, make it a standout in any collection. This label has become increasingly rare for its importance and beauty, connecting us to a bygone era.

9 3/4" x 9 1/2" ~ little to no wear.

Vintage asparagus crate labels, often designed as trapezoids to fit the slanted sides of the wooden crates, were a marvel of practical design and marketing flair. This unique shape ensured the labels adhered neatly without wrinkles or folds, maintaining their aesthetic appeal and clear readability. This blend of practicality and artistic vision made them stand out on store shelves, a testament to the craftsmanship of their creators.

K.R. Nutting Co. was one of the founders of the Growers Ice Company, established in 1936 in Salinas, California. The company was created to service the fresh produce industry in the Salinas Valley, which is often referred to as the 'Salad Bowl of the United States.' The founders, including K.R. Nutting, T.R. Merrill, Bruce Church, and E.E. Harden, played a significant role in establishing this region's reputation for fresh produce. Their influence and the company's legacy are reflected in the design and history of the Green Guard Asparagus Crate Label.

Historically, the name "iceberg lettuce" was coined in the 1930s because of this innovative company. Train cars full of lettuce were shipped across the country using ice produced at the Growers Ice facility. The ice plant continued to operate until it was demolished after many years of service.

Once a common sight Crate Label has become a rare and treasured relic of a bygone era. The meticulous lithography process used in its creation, involving a stone or metal plate, is a testament to its unique and unparalleled craftsmanship. With only a few left in the world, this rarity adds a sense of exclusivity and urgency to your purchase, making it a must-have for any serious collector.

Imagine this remarkable vintage advertising, a unique piece of history, adorning the walls of your home. Instead of being confined to a museum, it can bring a touch of nostalgia and elegance to any room in your home. Whether you're a collector, an art enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the past, this label is a versatile addition to any space. Its classic design and vibrant colors can complement various interior styles, from traditional to modern, adapting to your unique style and preferences.
