Description

💊 Morphine cough syrup from a corner drug store
Original Cocillana Comp. Syrup pharmacy label from Morwessel Drugs, 6th & Russell, Covington, Kentucky, dating to the 1910s narcotic‑era.
The text spells out the formula in bold type: ethyl morphine hydrochloride (a morphine derivative) ¼ grain per fluid ounce, 6% alcohol, cocillana, wild lettuce, squill, cascara, menthol, and more, with an early warning that it “may be habit forming.”

🏥 A real hometown pharmacy
Morwessel’s Pharmacy opened in 1881 and stayed in the Morwessel family for at least three generations, serving Covington’s neighborhoods for decades.
Local history sites still share photos and stories of Morwessel’s corner drug store and delivery service, and this label carries that same address and old‑style phone line: “HEMLOCK 3631 – DELIVERY SERVICE – 6TH AND RUSSELL, COVINGTON, KY.”

⚖️ Before narcotics got pushed behind the counter
In the early 1900s, syrups like Cocillana combined plant extracts with morphine‑family narcotics to quiet stubborn coughs, long before modern controlled‑substance rules.
This label comes from the transition era—strong enough to list ethyl morphine and warn about habit‑forming use, but early enough that it doesn’t yet carry the later standardized Harrison Act exemption language collectors look for on later narcotic labels.

🧾 Details

  • Original antique pharmacy label, approx. 2 1/2" x 2".

  • Black‑on‑cream printing with full formula, dosage, and warning text.

  • New old stock from long‑stored pharmacy label inventory.

  • You will receive one label like the ones shown, all from the same tiny NOS find—once they’re gone, that’s it.

🖼️ Why collectors hunt these
Narcotic‑era labels (morphine, codeine, opium, cocaine) have become some of the most chased pieces in pharmacy ephemera, and almost all have vanished into collections.
This Morwessel Cocillana label hits the sweet spot of named local drug store, explicit morphine content, early warning text, and real corner‑pharmacy history—one of the last chances to grab this exact piece before it disappears for good. 💊
