📋 What Is Printed On This Label

Every line of type on the sheet, transcribed from the label itself rather than paraphrased:

  • JUDY
  • BRAND
  • Louisiana
  • PORTO RICAN
  • HAND SELECTED
  • HAND PACKED
  • SWEET POTATOES

  • CARENCRO, LA.
  • U.S. No 2 (on a red diagonal corner banner, lower right)
  • WALLE & Co., Inc. N. O., LA. (printer imprint, lower left)

Printer: the lithographer is named on the sheet — WALLE & Co., Inc., N. O., LA., set in microtype in the margin.

The variety is printed on the sheet. Louisiana PORTO RICAN — the dominant Southern commercial sweet potato of the period — is set directly above SWEET POTATOES, with HAND SELECTED and HAND PACKED flanking the centre plate.

A printed federal grade and a printed weight. U.S. No 2 runs across a red diagonal banner at the lower right corner, and 50 LBS NET WHEN PACKED is printed at the top left.

The lithographer signed it. WALLE & Co., Inc. over N. O., LA. is printed in the bottom-left corner — Walle & Company of New Orleans, one of the Southern trade's own label houses. Sam Gothelf packed the potatoes; Walle printed the paper.

On condition. These are sold from an unused stack, so this describes the printing rather than one individual sheet: the ink is unfaded, the stock is unmounted and ungummed, and the sheet was never applied to a crate. Anything materially wrong with a particular sheet is disclosed plainly.
