Description

Bring a little golden‑age romance to your walls with this antique Merchants Queen embossed cigar label 💐✨ This is an original inner label from the early 1900s, not a reprint—printed on heavy stock, richly embossed, and overflowing with color.

At about 8½" x 6", it has the presence of a small poster 🖼️ The central portrait shows a beautiful “queen” with roses in her hair and lace draped over her shoulders, framed by flowers, palm trees, and a full tobacco plantation scene in the background—workers in the fields, barns, distant hills. It’s the perfect snapshot of how cigar makers sold a fantasy of tropical luxury and hard work in one image.

These labels come from original unused stock—true NOS from the 1900s–1920s. The example you’ll receive is clean and bright with just the softest whisper of age along the right edge, the kind of subtle toning that disappears once you mat and frame it. In everyday display, what you notice is the gold embossing and color, not the edge.

✨ Gold embossing & lost‑art printing

Look closely and you’ll see why collectors love these. The Merchants Queen lettering, flourishes, and parts of the dress and frame are raised and finished in metallic gold ✨ Around 1900, high‑end cigar labels used chromolithography combined with embossing and metallic bronzing powders to create this effect. It wasn’t cheap, and by the late 1920s this style of rich, multi‑stone printing was already fading away.

Modern printing can imitate the look, but it can’t quite replicate the depth and texture of these originals. That’s why museums and serious ephemera collections display cigar labels as important examples of commercial art.

🏛️ History, nostalgia, and why these matter

Cigar labels like Merchants Queen are tiny windows into a world where packaging had to fight for attention face‑to‑face on a store shelf. There were no screens, no digital ads—just paper, ink, and imagination. Printers poured their skill into these pieces, often using as many as 10 or more colors and plates to get the shading just right.

Most of the artists who designed them were commercial illustrators working behind the scenes. They rarely signed their work and were paid far less than the art was worth. Their names may be lost, but the labels they created still have power more than a century later. Every time we frame and display one, we’re rescuing that art from being forgotten ❤️

Imagine this Merchants Queen label:

  • Framed above a vintage bar cart or drinks cabinet 🍷

  • Hanging in a dressing room, bedroom, or reading nook as a splash of old‑world charm 💐

  • Anchoring a wall of cigar labels, tobacco tins, and antique advertising in your office or den 🕰️
