Description

🏕️ The Yomut Tent Band: Nomadic Textile Mastery from the Caspian Shore

The Yomut Turkmen — one of the five great Turkmen tribal confederations of Central Asia — inhabited the western coast of the Caspian Sea and the Kara Kum desert of what is today western Turkmenistan and northeastern Iran. Masters of the fiber arts, the Yomut produced textiles of extraordinary sophistication across a range of formats: the pile rugs and prayer rugs for which the Turkmen are widely known, and the magnificent flat-weave bands and decorative textiles that governed every aspect of life in the felt-covered yurt (ger), the portable domed dwelling of the nomadic Turkmen herder. Of these band textiles, none is more spectacular than the full tent band — the great woven strip that decorated the interior circumference of the yurt, transforming the nomadic dwelling into a space of great visual richness and cultural meaning. 🌿

🔴 The Zili Weave: Silk Highlights and Diamond Geometry

This tent band is woven in the Zili technique — a supplementary weft brocading method in which pattern wefts are carried across the ground warp to create the decorative design in the surface of the textile. The Zili technique allows for complex geometric patterns of great precision and visual impact, including the bold diamond forms — in rich red, deep blue, and crisp white — that are the characteristic motif of this tent band. The silk highlights woven into the predominantly wool field add a luminous accent to the geometric design, the silk catching the light differently from the wool and creating a subtle shimmer that animates the composition. Vegetable-dyed wool in colors from plant sources — madder for the reds, indigo for the blues — ensures the palette has the warmth and depth of authentic traditional dyeing. 🎨

📐 Scale and Function

The piece measures 11 in by 48 ft 6 in (not including fringes and ties) — the full length of a traditional Yomut tent band, designed to run the complete interior circumference of the yurt. The tent band's practical function was to stabilize the felt wall covering and decorate the transition between wall and roof ring; its symbolic function was to signal the status and identity of the household. A tent band of this scale and quality was reserved for dwellings of important tribal figures. The condition is remarkably good given the piece's age — late 1800s to early 1900s. Professionally cleaned and inspected. Item ID: KJE1. 🔬

💎 Yomut Tent Bands in the Collector World

Full Turkmen tent bands — particularly those in the Zili technique with silk highlights and vegetable-dyed color — are extremely rare on the market. Their combination of extraordinary scale, technical sophistication, historical depth, and the specific rarity of the intact full tent band format makes them among the most exceptional acquisitions in the field of tribal Central Asian textiles. A complete Yomut tent band from the late 1800s in this condition is a museum-quality piece. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
