Dale Murphy was born March 12, 1956, in Portland, Oregon — Multnomah County, the Pacific Northwest city on the Willamette River with Mount Hood rising to the east, the City of Roses, a place of Douglas fir forests and volcanic peaks and the kind of understated confidence that the Northwest produces in its athletes. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 1974 draft and came up as a catcher before transitioning to center field and eventually right field as his career developed. What he brought to the position — the athleticism, the arm, the range — made him one of the better defensive outfielders in the National League.
