He was selected 11th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2012 NHL Draft and was traded to the Nashville Predators the following year in the deal that brought Martin Erat to Washington – one of the most lopsided trades in recent NHL history, evaluated in retrospect by what Forsberg went on to become in Nashville over the following decade. The Predators received back one of the most gifted goal scorers in franchise history at a cost that their front office still benefits from in the ledger of what that trade produced.
