He was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 1981 and quickly established himself as one of the most athletically gifted goaltenders of his era — quick, explosive, technically sound in ways that allowed him to play behind a defense that sometimes asked him to face a lot of rubber while the offense was constructing the greatest scoring attack the NHL had ever seen. He was the anchor. While Gretzky and Messier and Kurri were making history at one end of the ice, Grant Fuhr was making it at the other.
