⚾ The 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians was one of the most watched and emotionally charged championship series in the history of Major League Baseball, and not primarily because of the quality of baseball played – though that was exceptional – but because of what was riding on the result for Chicago. The Cubs had not won a World Series since 1908, a drought of 108 years that had become one of the central narratives of American sports culture, a piece of comic and tragic baseball mythology that multiple generations of Cubs fans had inherited from the ones before them without ever getting to witness its resolution. Game 7 went to extra innings. A rain delay. A team meeting on the field. Kris Bryant to Anthony Rizzo for the final out. Chicago won 8 to 7. The drought ended.

⚾ John Lackey was born on October 23, 1978, in Abilene, Texas, and built a career as one of the most reliable postseason starters of his generation – he had previously won a World Series with the 2002 Anaheim Angels and the 2013 Boston Red Sox before joining the Cubs and completing a third championship. He was part of the Chicago rotation that year alongside Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jake Arrieta. The Rawlings Official Major League baseball that Lackey has signed is the same ball used in official Major League Baseball gameplay, designated with the Rawlings ROML (Rawlings Official Major League) certification.
