Marcel Dionne was born August 3, 1951, in Drummondville, Quebec — the region of the Saint-Charles-de-Drummond municipality in the Drummond Regional County, the Quebec manufacturing and hockey heartland south of the St. Lawrence River where the hockey culture runs as deep and as serious as anywhere in the world. He grew up playing in Quebec and developed into one of the most complete centers of his generation — 5 feet 8 inches of skating talent and scoring instinct that made larger defenders look slow and made goaltenders understand that this man was going to find the back of the net with alarming regularity. He was nicknamed the Little Beaver, and the nickname carried respect.

Marcel Dionne finished his career with 731 goals — third all-time in NHL history at the time of his retirement, trailing only Gordie Howe and Phil Esposito (this was before Wayne Gretzky rewrote all the records). 1040 career assists. 1771 career points. The 1980 Art Ross Trophy — awarded to the NHL's scoring leader — won in one of the most remarkable tiebreakers in hockey history: Dionne and Wayne Gretzky finished the 1979-80 season with exactly 137 points each.
