Montgomery was the engine of that Eagles offense for years. He was the franchise's all-time leading rusher during his career, and his runs defined Philadelphia football in the late 1970s and early 1980s in a way that Eagles fans remember with the kind of warmth that lives in the marrow of a sports city.
