Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #52 (1966) — the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics, a character whose cultural significance has only grown with each decade that has passed since his debut, his presence in the Marvel universe a permanent marker for what the genre can mean when it reaches beyond its comfort zone.
