Description

🌙 From the Landscapes of Afghanistan — Vintage 1930s Afghan Baluch Bag Face

The Baluchi people of Afghanistan have produced hand-knotted textile objects for centuries — pile rugs, kilims, prayer rugs, bags, and small woven accessories — in a tradition that predates the modern state borders of Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. Among the most collectible of Baluchi woven objects is the bag face: a flat or pile-knotted textile panel that once formed the decorative face of a storage bag used in nomadic and semi-nomadic daily life. These bag faces were woven with the same care and design vocabulary as full-size rugs, because in Baluchi material culture, beauty was never reserved for large formats alone. This rare 1930s example, hand-knotted from natural wool in Afghanistan, represents the genuine article from a period when Baluchi tribal weaving had not yet been adapted for export markets. 🌿

🧵 Hand-Knotted in Afghanistan — 1930s — Natural Wool

Crafted entirely by hand from natural wool pile on a natural wool foundation using the traditional Baluchi hand-knotting technique, this bag face was made in the 1930s when Afghan Baluchi production maintained its authentic character. The natural wool has retained its warmth and depth. Professionally washed and treated. ✨

🎨 Bold Tribal Geometric Patterns

The design features the characteristic Baluchi geometric vocabulary — bold angular field motifs in the dark, rich color palette of the Afghan Baluchi tradition. The geometric designs encode tribal identity and protective symbolism into every woven row. 🐺

📐 Display Dimensions

Measuring 29 by 25 inches, this bag face is well-proportioned for wall mounting as textile art, tabletop or case display, or as part of a curated collection of Afghan tribal textiles. 🖼️

🌍 The Afghan Baluchi Textile Heritage

Afghan Baluchi textiles from the pre-WWII period — particularly those from the 1920s and 1930s — represent a critical window into the tribal weaving traditions of Central Asia before commercial production began adapting to Western tastes. Their authentic tribal designs, natural dye work, and hand-knotted construction connect them directly to a world of nomadic material culture that has largely vanished. 🌐

Condition

Overall perfect condition. A small area of damage is visible in the photos — consistent with authentic age and use history. Photos taken under natural light. Professionally washed and treated. Rug #1522.

🏡 Perfect For

Collectors of Afghan and Baluchi tribal textiles ✦ Wall display and case display ✦ Pre-WWII ethnic textile collections ✦ Anyone drawn to the bold geometric power of Afghan Baluchi nomadic art 🌙
