Description

🌹 Vintage Persian Mood Rug: Hand-Knotted Natural Wool in Deep Red and Blue, 1950s

From the Mood (Moud) weaving region of South Khorasan in northeastern Iran — a district known for high knot density, rich red grounds, and fine curvilinear floral compositions — this vintage Persian Mood rug dates to the 1950s. 🏛️ Hand-knotted from 100% natural soft wool on a deep red/burgundy ground with blue and cream floral medallion and vine design, measuring a grand 8 ft 7 in by 14 ft 1 in, in preloved condition with full pile retained. Rug ID: K1773.

📜 The Mood Rug Tradition of South Khorasan

Mood (also transliterated Moud or Mud) is a village in the Birjand area of South Khorasan Province in northeastern Iran. 🗺️ The Mood weaving tradition developed a distinctive design vocabulary characterized by dense field composition, rich red grounds, and fine curvilinear floral patterns — vines, palmettes, cloud bands, and medallion systems — at high knot density. Mood rugs from the mid-20th century represent the period when this regional weaving tradition was at its strongest, producing consistently high-quality pieces from fine natural wool.

The 1950s vintage places this rug in the generation before the industrialization of Persian rug production — a period when natural fiber, hand-spun or semi-hand-spun wool, and trained workshop weavers were still the norm in South Khorasan production. 🌍

🔴 Color: Deep Red and Burgundy Ground with Blue Floral Details

The deep red to burgundy ground of this rug is the classic Mood palette — the saturated madder red that grounds the fine floral composition and sets off the cool blue, navy, and cream of the medallion and vine detailing. 💙 Against this rich red field, the Mood composition develops in curvilinear floral vine patterns and central medallion work that creates the layered, dense design character for which Mood rugs are valued.

The red-and-blue Persian palette is among the most enduring in residential interior design — the warm red ground complemented by cool blue detailing creates a balanced, authoritative color statement that works across a wide range of interior palettes from traditional to transitional. 🏡

🧶 100% Natural Soft Wool, Full Pile

The 100% natural soft wool of this rug — in full pile condition despite its age — reflects both the quality of the original construction and the care it has received. ✋ Mood rugs from this period used fine, soft highland wool from northeastern Iran — a fiber with a characteristic silkiness that distinguishes it from coarser tribal wool. Full pile condition in a 70-plus year old hand-knotted Persian rug is genuinely uncommon. 💫

📐 Grand Format: 8 ft 7 in by 14 ft 1 in

At 8 ft 7 in by 14 ft 1 in, this rug is in the grand-format category — a size reserved for the most important room-defining textile placements. 🛋️ It accommodates a substantial formal living room with full seating coverage, a dining room with a 10-to-12-seat table and chairs pulled back, or a primary bedroom where coverage extends well beyond a king-size bed on all sides. At this scale, the deep red Mood composition becomes the organizing element of the entire room's visual identity.

Condition: Preloved

This rug is in preloved condition — it has been used, appreciated, and cared for over its lifetime. 🕰️ The full pile is retained, a testament to the quality of the wool and construction. The preloved character of a 70-year-old Persian hand-knotted rug at full pile represents both authenticity and durability: this textile has proven itself over decades of use. Condition details available on request.

🌹 Seven Decades of Persian Craft

A Mood rug from the 1950s, in full pile, at grand scale, is a rare alignment of age, condition, quality, and size. 💎 Deep red and blue, hand-knotted in South Khorasan from natural soft wool, still doing what it was made to do after more than seventy years: organizing a room around a Persian garden in wool.
