The Bengals black. Tiger stripes and end zone theater and #85 and the wide receiver who made the NFL fine him for celebrating the game he was born to play. Signed by Chad Ochocinco Johnson — the man from Liberty City, Miami, who went from Langston University to Santa Monica College to Oregon State to the 36th pick of the 2001 NFL Draft and turned Cincinnati into a national conversation about what a wide receiver could do after the touchdown just as much as what he could do before it. JSA authenticated. Framed at 35x39 inches. Wall-ready. Hang it today.

🌟 Liberty City, Miami — Langston University — Oregon State — The Bengals Carousel

Vincent Edward Johnson — who would become Chad Johnson, and then legally Chad Ochocinco, and then Chad Johnson again — was born January 9, 1978, in Liberty City, Miami, Florida. Liberty City is one of Miami's most historically significant neighborhoods: a predominantly Black community in northwestern Miami-Dade County with a deep sports tradition and a talent pipeline that has fed both college and professional rosters for decades. Johnson attended school in Miami and eventually found his way to Langston University in Oklahoma — a historically Black college and university with a football program — before transferring to Santa Monica College and then to Oregon State University, where he played one season of college football for the Beavers under coach Dennis Erickson. The Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft with the 36th overall pick. He was handed jersey number 85. Everything else is touchdown theater and six Pro Bowls and a name change and a fined wallet and one of the most entertaining careers at wide receiver in the history of the NFL.

🏆 The Celebrations — The 6 Pro Bowls — The Personality That Made #85 a Brand

Chad Johnson was a genuinely elite NFL wide receiver — 6x Pro Bowl, First-Team All-Pro twice, three seasons with 1,400 or more receiving yards — but the part of his career that became culturally significant was the theater he staged in the end zone. The celebration with the pylon used as a golf putter. The Riverdance. The moment at Lambeau Field where he leaped into the stands and performed the Lambeau Leap with the opposing fans. The proposal to a cheerleader. The CPR ceremony. The Hall of Fame ceremony. Each one was planned, executed with precision, and penalized by the NFL with fines that Johnson paid with what appeared to be genuine cheerfulness — because the celebrations were not a mistake he was trying to avoid repeating. They were the point. He was performing the joy of playing football in the NFL, and the performance was as genuine as anything he did in a route.

In 2008, he legally changed his last name to Ochocinco — Spanish for "eight five," his jersey number — a move that generated enough commentary to fill a news cycle and that confirmed what Bengals fans and NFL observers had understood for years: #85 was not just a player. He was an entertainment industry that happened to play wide receiver. He changed his name back to Johnson in 2012. The black Bengals jersey represents the core of that career — ten seasons in Cincinnati, six Pro Bowls, the tiger stripes, and an end zone that always had something happening after the catch.
