Born October 19, 1949 in Torrington, Kansas โ€” a small community on the High Plains that has never been associated with producing professional football quarterbacks, which is part of what makes the story interesting โ€” Lynn Dickey came out of Kansas State University as one of the most talented passing prospects of his era and was selected 3rd overall in the 1971 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. His path to Green Bay was not a straight line: injuries, trades, and the kind of career turbulence that breaks most players followed him through his early professional years. When he arrived in Green Bay, it was with the understanding that durability and health had not been his defining characteristics. What he produced when healthy was something else entirely.

The 1983 Green Bay Packers season was Lynn Dickey's masterwork. Under head coach Bart Starr, Dickey threw for 4,458 yards and 32 touchdowns โ€” Packers single-season records that stood for years. The team around him gave him weapons, and Dickey rewarded them by producing one of the most prolific single-season passing performances the NFC had seen in the early years of the modern passing era. It was the kind of season that, in a different era with different surrounding talent, might have produced a much longer legacy conversation.
