Description

🎴 Graded 1888 Allen & Ginter American Indian Chiefs N2 #NNO Wetcunie Baseball Tobacco Card — SGC 1.5 Fair — The Card That Predates Baseball Cards as We Know Them

🎴 Before the T206 Honus Wagner. Before the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. Before Bowman, before Panini, before PSA grading slabs and hobby boxes and blaster packs at retail — there were the tobacco cards of Allen & Ginter, produced in Richmond, Virginia, beginning in 1886, and representing some of the very first collectible trading cards in American history. The 1888 Allen & Ginter N2 American Indian Chiefs series is among the earliest documented trading card sets in existence — a tobacco card series issued as premiums inside cigarette packages nearly 140 years ago, depicting American Indian chiefs with the engraved illustration style of the late 19th century. This is the #NNO Wetcunie card from that series, graded SGC 1.5 Fair — proof of remarkable survival for a piece of printed cardboard that has endured since the presidency of Grover Cleveland. Condition: NOS.

🏭 Allen & Ginter — The Company That Invented What We Collect

🏭 William S. Kimball and Allen & Ginter — rival Richmond, Virginia tobacco companies — are credited with pioneering the practice of inserting collectible illustrated cards into cigarette packages as a promotional premium in the mid-1880s. These tobacco cards, printed on stiff cardstock with detailed engraved illustrations, were designed to encourage brand loyalty and repeat purchases among tobacco consumers, and they succeeded beyond any reasonable projection: collectors began pursuing complete series sets, trading duplicates, and storing cards with the care that modern collectors bring to their PSA-graded slabs. The Allen & Ginter brand name lives on in the annual Topps Allen & Ginter baseball card product, a deliberate tribute to the company whose promotional inserts invented the hobby. Condition: NOS.

📜 The N2 American Indian Chiefs Series — A Historical Document in Card Form

📜 The Allen & Ginter N2 series, issued in 1888, depicted American Indian chiefs using the engraved illustration style of the period — each card featuring a portrait of a documented leader of the indigenous nations of North America, presented with the name designation that Allen & Ginter's artists and editors applied in their production of the series. These cards occupy an unusual position in American collectibles: they are simultaneously historical documents of how 19th-century American commercial culture depicted indigenous leadership, artifacts of the tobacco industry's earliest marketing innovation, and physical objects that have survived the full weight of 13 decades and eight years of American history. Condition: NOS.

SGC 1.5 Fair — What Survival Means at 138 Years

⏳ Scientific Games Corporation (SGC) graded this card at 1.5 Fair — a grade that, for a standard modern card, would indicate heavy wear, creases, and surface damage that would significantly reduce collector value. For an 1888 tobacco card, a grade of 1.5 Fair means something entirely different: it means the card exists. A piece of thin cardstock printed in 1888 has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the introduction of television, the moon landing, the digital revolution, and 138 years of the ordinary attrition that destroys most paper objects far more quickly than that. The card is here. The image is legible. The subject is identifiable. At 138 years old, those qualities alone make this a remarkable artifact. Condition: NOS.
