⚾ In the summer of 1961, two New York Yankees were chasing Babe Ruth. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris had both started the season hitting home runs at a pace that made Ruth's 60 – the single-season record that had stood since 1927 – seem reachable for the first time since Ruth set it. Mantle's injuries slowed his chase in September. Maris kept going. On October 1, 1961, in the final game of the season, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run off Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The record was broken. The number was 61. And a card bearing Maris's image in the 1961 Topps set – card #2, produced in the year the record fell – is one of the most historically significant cards in the vintage baseball collecting market. ⚾
