He won the Heisman Trophy in 1963 as a junior, one of the rare Heisman winners whose selection was met with virtually universal agreement. But Annapolis carries a commitment that NFL money cannot fast-forward: Staubach fulfilled his military service obligation after graduation, serving as a supply officer in Vietnam before his discharge, and the Dallas Cowboys waited. He finally arrived in their backfield in 1969 at age 27 – years later than nearly every other player drafted in the same period – and still managed to play eleven NFL seasons, all in Dallas.
