⚾ Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Score Traded #100T — PSA 9 Mint Rookie Baseball Card — The Kid, 630 Home Runs, Hall of Fame 2016

There is a town in southwestern Pennsylvania called Donora, population a few thousand, that sits along a bend in the Monongahela River. By rights, Donora should not be the birthplace of two of the greatest baseball players who ever lived. And yet. Stan Musial was born there in 1920. And on April 21, 1969, Ken Griffey Jr. was born there too — two Hall of Famers from one small town on the river, one of the most remarkable coincidences in the history of American sports.

Griffey grew up in Cincinnati, where his father Ken Griffey Sr. played for the Reds and where the game was as much a part of the household as dinner conversation. He attended Moeller High School in Cincinnati, one of the most storied athletic programs in the country, and by the time he finished his senior year it was already clear that the Seattle Mariners had made the right call in selecting him with the first overall pick of the 1987 MLB Draft. He was seventeen years old. The Mariners were patient. They would be rewarded beyond anything they could have imagined.

⚾ On April 3, 1989, Ken Griffey Jr. made his major league debut at the Kingdome in Seattle. He was nineteen years old. He was the youngest player in the American League. And within weeks it was clear that the baseball card manufacturers who had included him in their 1989 rookie card offerings had made a very good decision. The 1989 Score Traded factory set was issued mid-season to capture players who had been traded, called up, or were debuting after the main 1989 Score base set had gone to print. Card #100T in that set is Ken Griffey Jr. — his Score Traded rookie card, one of the legitimate 1989 rookie cards recognized by PSA and the broader hobby community.

🏆 This specific card has been graded PSA 9 — Mint. At that grade, the card exhibits sharp corners, near-perfect centering, excellent surface quality, and strong gloss. A PSA 9 represents the grade serious collectors pursue when a PSA 10 Gem Mint is unavailable or out of reach — the grade that says this card survived more than thirty-five years in excellent shape, and the certification from PSA confirms it. In a hobby where condition is everything, PSA 9 Mint is a statement about both the card and the care it received.

🌟 Ken Griffey Jr. finished his career with 630 home runs (7th all-time), 1,836 RBI, a .284 batting average, 13 Gold Gloves, 13 All-Star selections, and the 1997 AL MVP Award. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016 on the first ballot, with 99.3% of the vote — the highest percentage in history at the time. The backwards cap. The effortless swing. The center-field range that no outfielder in his generation could match. The pure joy of the game radiating off every at-bat. Ken Griffey Jr. was baseball at its most electric, and the 1989 Score Traded #100T was there at the very beginning. PSA 9 Mint. It does not get more foundational than this.
