Description

🏺 Hamadan: The Great Village Weaving Region of Western Persia

The Hamadan region of western Iran is one of the most prolific and historically important rug-producing areas in the entire Persian weaving world. Unlike the prestigious urban workshops of Tabriz, Isfahan, and Kashan — where court-trained designers directed teams of professional weavers — Hamadan production has always been village-based: a vast network of hundreds of distinct villages, each weaving to its own design tradition within the broader Hamadan regional vocabulary, producing the rugs that have been exported to world markets for more than a century. The village origin of Hamadan production gives these rugs a particular vitality and directness — not the formal refinement of city production but the bold, immediate character of a tradition grown from the weaving culture of individual communities. 🌿

🔵 Tribal Geometry in Deep Blue

The tribal Hamadan design tradition — with its bold geometric medallions, angular botanical motifs, and strong color compositions — reaches one of its most compelling expressions in the deep blue colorway of this runner. The depth of the indigo field gives the geometric patterning room to breathe, while the vibrant earth tones of the decorative elements stand out with clarity and force against the blue ground. The single-weft knotting technique characteristic of Hamadan production creates a sturdy, dense pile well suited to the demands of the runner format, where durability is as important as beauty. 🎨

📐 Construction and Condition

Hand-knotted, 100% wool, made in Iran. Vintage, approximately 30-40 years old. Thickness approximately 0.5 in. The piece measures 3 ft 6 in by 10 ft. Condition: excellent for its age, with minimal wear. Care: vacuum regularly on a low setting, avoid direct sunlight, rotate periodically. Professional cleaning recommended every few years. Rug ID: K1946. 🔬

💎 Vintage Hamadan Runners in the Market

Vintage Persian Hamadan runners from the mid-to-late 20th century are consistently sought after in the traditional rug market. Their combination of genuine Persian village production, the sturdy Hamadan wool and single-weft construction, the bold tribal geometric designs, and the well-aged patina of a piece that has developed character over decades makes them superior acquisitions to newer production. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
