Description

🏺 Meshgin: The Weavers of Ardabil Province

Meshginshahr (historically known as Meshkin) is a city in the Ardabil province of northwestern Iran, tucked into the highlands south of the Sabalan volcano. The Meshgin weaving tradition is one of the lesser-known but quietly distinguished regional styles within the rich landscape of Persian village and tribal rug production. Meshgin rugs and runners are known for their quality handspun wool, their bold geometric compositions, and a design vocabulary that includes both abstract geometric forms and the distinctive animal and figural motifs — birds, horses, stylized human figures — that give Meshgin pieces their particular character and vitality. 🌿

🔴 The Crimson Field and Geometric Animal Motifs

The vivid crimson field of this vintage Meshgin runner is one of the defining elements of the regional palette — that deep, warm red that draws the eye and creates the perfect contrast for the geometric medallions and animal motifs in olive green, deep navy, warm ivory, and glowing amber that fill the composition. The handspun wool — spun by hand rather than mechanically processed — gives the pile a characteristic depth of texture and a slight irregularity that is one of the most charming qualities of traditional village production. 🎨

📐 Construction and Condition

Hand-knotted, handspun wool pile on cotton warp, made in Persia (Iran). Vintage, 1950s. Thickness approximately 0.4 in. The piece measures 4 ft 11 in by 11 ft. Care: vacuum on a low setting, rotate periodically for even wear, blot spills immediately. Professional cleaning recommended for deeper maintenance. Rug ID: K1737. 🔬

💎 Persian Village Runners in the Market

Vintage Persian runners from the mid-20th century — particularly those from the regional village traditions of northwestern Iran with handspun wool and authentic geometric designs — are consistently sought after. The combination of genuine Persian origin, the quality of handspun wool production, and the distinctive Meshgin design vocabulary with its animal motifs makes these runners exceptional acquisitions. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
