The Home Insurance Company was founded in 1853, and it grew into one of the big American property and casualty insurers, writing nearly every line of insurance and best known for industrial property insurance and liability for large accounts. It went through a long run of changes that helped shape the modern property and casualty business, and it was placed in liquidation in 2003.

When Home Insurance Company was established in 1853, the insurance world was vastly different from what we know today. Property owners purchased insurance as a hedge against risk, with claims typically covering no more than the value of lost property – and sometimes less. The limited variety of insurance types available meant that many merchants struggled to secure adequate protection for their assets. Recognizing this gap in the market, a group of New York City merchants banded together to create The Home Insurance Company. With a paid-in capital of $500,000 – a substantial sum for an insurance company at the time – they set out to provide much-needed coverage for property owners across the nation.

A little stock-certificate history to go with it: the oldest surviving share certificate in the world is a Dutch East India Company certificate from 1606 (the company had been selling shares since 1602), found in a Dutch archive in 2010. And in October 2013 the Walt Disney Company stopped issuing paper stock certificates, one of the last big companies to give them up.

My photographs can only capture a fraction of the beauty of these Home Insurance Company stock certificates. They were printed on heavy paper stock, like a dollar bill but stiffer, which keeps them vibrant for generations.
