Description

🏛️ The Karaja Rug: Village Masterwork from the Heriz District

The village of Karaja sits in the Heriz district of East Azerbaijan province in northwestern Iran — the same mountainous terrain that has produced some of the most celebrated rugs in the Persian weaving tradition. Karaja rugs share the robust knotting construction, the high-quality wool, and the bold geometric spirit of their famous neighbors the Heriz rugs, but they carry a specifically village-level design tradition that is their own. The signature of the Karaja rug is the triple medallion format: three angular, chiseled medallions arranged on the vertical axis of the field, each one a distinct geometric form anchored in the composition with powerful visual authority. This antique Karaja, from the 1900s, is a fine example of this distinctive tradition. 🌿

🔷 The Triple Medallion and the Indigo Ground

The midnight indigo blue of this Karaja's field is one of the great ground colors of the northwestern Persian rug tradition — that deep, saturated indigo produced from the best natural dye sources, aged over more than a century to the glowing blue that only genuine age can produce. Against this powerful ground, the three chiseled medallions anchor the composition with force, surrounded by a dense arrangement of blossoms, leaves, rosettes, and the full vocabulary of Persian floral ornament. 🔵

The palette sings with the range of colors that characterize the best Karaja production: turquoise, jade green, warm terra-cotta, ivory, and rust — a combination of cool and warm tones that creates visual balance across the field. The subtle, freeform quality of the floral motifs gives the composition its characteristic Persian village vitality. 🎨
