Description

🚂 Step into the age of steel rails and Gilded Age finance with this original 1897 Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway Company gold bond, complete with its impressive coupon sheet. Measuring about 15" x 10", this large‑format bond once helped finance one of the most important east‑west rail routes in the United States—the line that carried trains between Buffalo and Chicago along the south shore of Lake Erie and across northern Indiana.

🏞️ The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway (LS&MS) was formed in 1869 by merging several smaller lines into a single through route. It quickly became a key part of the New York Central system’s “Water Level Route,” the low‑grade path that allowed trains to run fast and heavy between the Atlantic seaboard and Chicago. In 1914 LS&MS was formally folded into the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, helping create the unified New York Central Railroad that dominated the region for decades.

🟡 This 1897 bond comes from that powerful, pre‑merger period. Company reports from the late 1890s describe exchanging older obligations into new 3½% gold bonds, matching the date and denomination on this piece. The design is everything collectors love: a bold green frame, detailed engraving, a dramatic railroad vignette at the top, a central allegorical figure, and big $1000 denominations in each corner. The tall coupon sheet running alongside the bond is a miniature history of interest payments that investors once clipped and redeemed at the bank.

🏛️ This line wasn’t just important then—its route is still a major corridor today. Much of the former LS&MS main line remains in heavy use by Amtrak and freight roads, carrying trains between Chicago and the East over track this bond helped pay for. That continuity makes the document feel less like a relic and more like a snapshot from an ongoing story.

🖼️ Printed on quality paper with fine engraving, the bond was designed to inspire confidence in investors and to live in neat bank and brokerage files. More than a century later the color is still strong and the detail still sharp, making it fantastic for framing in an office, train room, den, or home library. Display it with the coupons fully visible, or mat it so the top vignette and title take center stage—either way, it is serious wall presence.

📜 Variants: You can choose the look you prefer when you order. One option shows the bond with its original coupon sheet, while another shows a companion example where the coupon sheet carries bold red “CANCELLED” overprints from the railroad’s bookkeeping process. In both cases you are getting an authentic 1897 Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway gold bond on heavy engraved paper—the only difference is how the coupon area tells its story.

📏 Approximate size of the main bond is 15" x 10" (the full piece is larger when you include the coupon strip). Original 1897 Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway Company $1000 gold bond with coupon sheet, a stand‑out piece of late‑19th‑century American railroad finance and artwork.
