This Vintage New Old Stock (NOS) Orange Soda bottle cap 🥤 dates to the 1970s, unused and never crimped onto a bottle. Big orange ORANGE SODA lettering on silver inside an orange ring, and no brand name at all, just the flavor, which is part of its charm. Like every uncrimped crown, it measures 1 1/4 inches across.

🍊 What's on it

The whole recipe, printed right on the face: "Carbonated water, sugar or corn sweetener, citric acid, gum acacia, orange oils, glycerol ester of wood resin, brominated vegetable oil, Yellow #6, Red #40, preserved with sodium benzoate."

📅 How old is it?

Two ingredients date it. Red #40 only came along in 1971, when the Allied Chemical Corporation introduced it, so this cap can't be older than that. It took over from Red #2, which the FDA banned in January 1976 after a Russian study linked it to cancer. That scare led to one of the great candy stories: Mars pulled red M&M's off the market for about a decade, even though they never used Red #2; red came back in holiday bags in 1985 and in every bag by 1987.

And brominated vegetable oil, with the glycerol ester of wood resin, is what kept the orange oils mixed through the soda instead of floating to the top. The FDA pulled BVO off its "generally recognized as safe" list in 1970, allowed it only at small amounts after that, and banned it outright in 2024, so this is an ingredient list you won't see on a soda again. The "sugar or corn sweetener" wording fits the 1970s too.
