Brownie Root Beer Neck Label 🍺 Atlas Bottling Co., Detroit, Michigan

Size: 5" x 2 1/2"

An unused bottle-neck label: SERVE COLD, Brownie in big script, ROOT BEER, and the grinning little Brownie himself in his pointed cap up top. I have a stack, so yours will look just like this one.

🏭 Detroit's Own Root Beer

Brownie was Detroit's root beer. Walter Tomaszewski, an immigrant from Poland, started the Atlas bottling company in Detroit, and Brownie Root Beer came along in 1929, next to Atlas's Cheer-Up, Bulldog Ginger Beer and the usual club soda, cream and strawberry. The neck label doesn't name the bottler, but the matching Brownie body label does: ATLAS BOTTLING CO., DETROIT, MICH. 48212 - that's the ZIP code Detroit shares with Hamtramck, the big Polish neighborhood. The Atlas plant closed in the mid-1990s, was sold in 2003 and torn down, and there's a strip mall on the spot now. The name lives on, though - you can still buy Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer, "since 1929."

Why a brownie? In old Scottish folklore a brownie is a helpful little household sprite, and Palmer Cox's Brownies books made them famous with American kids in the 1880s and '90s.

📜 The Stories

Local legend has it that Detroit kids loved the Brownie so much they'd peel the labels off returned bottles and trade them, and that folks of a certain age could spot that grin across a store from half a block away. Collectors who follow Detroit soda say the little fellow's face changed a bit over the years - a different cap angle here, a new grin there - if you line the labels up side by side.

A sure smile for anybody from Detroit or Hamtramck.
