Vintage Chinese Bronze Pendant 🔔 Braided Foxtail Chain, Dome Drop

Size: 4.25 inches ~ honest wear, tarnish and patina throughout, and one end cap has a small split at its edge.

🔔 An Old Bronze Pendant, Just As It Is

This is a short length of tightly braided bronze wire — a foxtail weave, the same over-under interlace you'd braid into hair, done here in fine metal instead. Each end is finished with a plain rolled metal cap. One cap carries two small wire jump rings that hold a single solid domed drop, shaped like a little acorn or bell, though it's solid straight through with no opening or clapper. The other end finishes in a simple bent wire loop.

The color is the nice part: warm gold across the dome, cooling to a greyer tarnish along the caps and the braid. That's honest age on real metal, and I wouldn't touch it.

It's old Chinese bronze — that's how it came to me, and that's what I'm passing along.

Get close to the braid and you can see the individual strands doing their over-under dance, tight and even the whole length of it — that's the part I keep coming back to. It's a texture a stamped or cast chain never gets.

⏳ A Weave Five Thousand Years Old

That weave has a long, long history. Jewelers call it loop-in-loop, and foxtail is one of its names: wire loops passed through one another, over and over, until they make a supple rope that looks braided. Some of the oldest known came out of the Royal Cemetery at Ur, in ancient Mesopotamia — the graves Leonard Woolley, who led the joint British Museum and Penn Museum dig there, uncovered in the late 1920s — and they date to around 3000 BC. The same technique carried gold and silver chains through ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Byzantium and on to the end of the Middle Ages. Today's machine-made foxtail chains copy the look; this one is a short length of the real over-and-through weave, in bronze.
