Sarsaparilla From Dodge City? 🥤 Vintage 1950s NOS Western Soda Bottle Cap

Size: 1 1/4"

🤠 This is a New Old Stock (NOS) 1950s Dodge City Sarsaparilla cork‑lined steel bottle cap from the Kasten Beverage Company of Saugatuck, Michigan, where caps like this came out of the old bottling plant. DODGE CITY in Old West wanted-poster letters over SARSAPARILLA, and a cowboy hat circled by a lasso, printed in brown on silver. Never crimped onto a bottle, original cork liner. Like every uncrimped crown, it measures 1 1/4 inches across.

🌵 Dodge City, Queen of the Cowtowns

The name on this cap was the most famous cowtown in the West. Dodge City, Kansas grew up in 1872 beside Fort Dodge, just as the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad arrived that September. First came buffalo hides and bones, then from 1875 to 1885 the cattle drives, with tens of thousands of head shipped out every year, and Dodge became the "Cowboy Capital" and "Queen of the Cowtowns." Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and his brothers, Doc Holliday and Bill Tilghman all passed through, and Boot Hill got its name there. And a sarsaparilla is exactly what the cowboy in every Western ordered at the saloon.

By the 1950s Dodge City was back on everybody's mind: Gunsmoke, set in Dodge with Marshal Matt Dillon, started on television in 1955 and ran twenty years and 635 episodes, the longest-running Western in TV history. A Western soda with a lasso on the cap fits that decade to a T.

🏖️ Saugatuck, Michigan

Kasten's, bottled by Erv. F. Kasten & Son, was Saugatuck's own soda maker, and they put out flavors like orange-pineapple along with this Western sarsaparilla. Saugatuck has a history as colorful as the cap. In 1910 Chicago Art Institute painters John C. Johanson, Frederick Fursman and Walter Clute started the Ox-Bow summer art school there, one of the oldest in the country, and it made Saugatuck an art colony. And just down the Kalamazoo River lies Singapore, a lumber town founded in 1836 to rival Chicago; once the trees were cut, the dunes blew in and buried it, and over the years bits of roofs and old building timbers have worked their way back up out of the sand. The dune-ride drivers out there will tell you the hotel roof and the church steeple were still poking out of the sand until the early 1970s.
