Vintage La Green's Brilliantine Bottle | Art Deco Pressed Glass Hair Grooming | 1930s–1950s 🧴

Size: 5 inches ~ A little of the old brilliantine still sits in the bottom, the label's torn away at the lower right corner, and the black paint on the metal cap has worn through in spots to the metal underneath.

🌿 La Green's

The label is an arched green panel with a stylized five-leaf plant fanned out at the crown, "La Green's" written across it in green script, and "Brilliantine" underneath. Below that a line starting "CO" and a green band at the foot starting "LA" both disappear into the tear - the lower right corner of the label is gone.

🧴 Glass and Cap

The bottle is clear glass, rectangular with the corners canted off, a run of horizontal ribs at the shoulder and vertical ribbing down each side panel, closed with a threaded metal cap painted black.

🔑 What's on the Bottom

Turn it over and the base carries a keystone with a letter inside it, a "6" above center and "245" off to the right. That keystone mark belongs to the Knox Glass Bottle Company, stamped on bottles made at its plants from 1932 into 1968 - so this one was blown somewhere in that long stretch. The "6" and "245" are mold and set numbers off the glasshouse floor, not a date.

💈 Brilliantine and the Barbershop

Brilliantine itself came out of Paris - the house of Ed. Pinaud, the French perfumer's firm that by 1900 was being run by Victor Klotz, introduced it to the world that year at the Exposition Universelle: a scented oil that softened hair and gave it a mirror shine. It crossed the Atlantic fast and became a fixture of the American barbershop chair right alongside the straight razor and the bay rum, and it's the product behind the Valentino look - that slicked, gleaming hair every leading man wore through the silent era and into the talkies.

The old barber's shelf was its own little gallery: glass bottles and tins in rows, labels in green and gold and red, big names like Vitalis, Fitch's and Jeris right next to dozens of regional brands that never made it past their own state line but had customers who wouldn't use anything else. La Green's is one of those. The Depression didn't kill brilliantine, either - the barbershop stayed the one small luxury a working man allowed himself, and the pressed-glass bottles of those years, with their ribbed panels, stepped shoulders and faceted bases, show Art Deco glass at its most everyday and its best.
