Description

🐺 A Nomadic Vessel with a Wolf's Guardian — Vintage 1970s Persian Baluch Salt Bag Rug

Salt was once as precious as currency across the nomadic world of Baluchistan — the vast, arid region spanning eastern Iran, western Pakistan, and southern Afghanistan where the Baluchi tribal people have woven their extraordinary textiles for centuries. The salt bag — known as a nemakdan in Persian — was one of the most important woven objects in Baluchi nomadic life, a hand-knotted vessel designed to carry and protect this essential resource during the long seasonal migrations across the Baluchi plateau. These bags were woven with extraordinary care and decorated with the full tribal design vocabulary of the Baluchi people, because even a functional object deserved the protection and beauty of authentic tribal art. This rare 1970s example, in perfect condition with outstanding natural dyes, is a magnificent survivor of the living Baluchi textile tradition. 🌿

🧵 Hand-Knotted in Persia — 1970s — Natural Wool Pile and Foundation

Crafted entirely by hand from natural wool pile on a natural wool foundation using the traditional Baluchi hand-knotting technique, this salt bag was made in the 1970s when Baluchi nomadic weaving in eastern Persia still maintained its authentic tribal character. The natural dye colors remain vibrant and brilliant after decades, a testament to the quality of the traditional dye materials and processes used by Baluchi weavers. In perfect condition. Professionally washed and treated. ✨

🎨 Geometric Patterns with the Kurt Agzi (Wolf's Mouth) Protective Symbol

The design features the dense geometric vocabulary of Baluchi tribal weaving in vivid natural dye colors. Woven into the composition is the Kurt Agzi — literally the wolf's mouth or wolf's track — one of the most powerful protective symbols in the entire vocabulary of Turkic and Baluchi tribal weaving. The wolf, in Turkic and Baluchi tradition, is a sacred guardian animal believed to protect against evil and misfortune, and the Kurt Agzi motif was woven into textiles specifically to invoke this protection for the household and its contents. Every geometric motif was woven from memory, without a pattern, by a weaver who carried the tribal design language in her hands and her memory. 🐺

📐 Display Dimensions

Measuring 2 ft 2 in by 1 ft 11 in, this salt bag is perfectly sized for wall mounting as a framed textile artwork, display in a shadow box or case, or as the central accent in a curated collection of Baluchi tribal objects. 🖼️

🌍 The Baluchi Salt Bag in the Collector Market

Baluchi salt bags are among the most collectible categories in the field of nomadic tribal textiles. Their small size makes them displayable in virtually any setting; their direct connection to nomadic daily life gives them a functional authenticity that purely decorative objects cannot match; and the combination of bold geometric design with natural dye work makes them visually compelling at any scale. Genuine pieces from the 1970s, made before commercial production fully adapted to export markets, with intact natural dyes and in perfect condition, are increasingly difficult to find. 🌐
