Remember Diet Frostie Root Beer? 🥤 Vintage 1960s Bottle Cap, Worcester, Massachusetts Bottler

Size: 1 1/4"

🥤 An authentic piece of early American diet soda and regional bottling history.

This original Diet Frostie Root Beer bottle cap dates to the early 1960s and was produced for regional distribution by American Products Bottling Co. of Worcester, Massachusetts, operating under license from the Frostie Beverage Company, founded in 1939 in Catonsville, Maryland.

This cap is New Old Stock (NOS) — unused, never crimped onto a bottle, and preserved from original bottler inventory. The cork liner remains intact.

Unlike standard Frostie Root Beer, Diet Frostie was not bottled nationwide. During the early years of low‑calorie soda experimentation, individual bottlers decided whether to produce diet versions for their local markets. Many regions never adopted it at all. This cap exists because a New England bottler chose to participate in that early shift.

The printed “1 calorie per 6 oz serving” text reflects early nutritional marketing, long before modern artificial sweeteners and national diet branding became common. At the time, diet beverages were still a novelty, produced in limited regional runs and aimed at adult consumers.

This example combines classic Frostie branding with New England bottling history, offering a clear look at how regional soda producers experimented with changing tastes during the postwar era.

🏭 WHS — the Mark of W. H. Hutchinson & Sons, Chicago

There are three small initials on the rim — WHS — and they are the cap maker's, not the bottler's. They stand for W. H. Hutchinson & Sons of Chicago.

William H. Hutchinson was a Chicago soda bottler and a maker of bottling plant. In 1879 his son Charles G. Hutchinson patented the Hutchinson's Patent Spring Stopper — a wire loop and rubber disc that sealed a soda bottle from the inside, and that you opened by thumping it down with your thumb. It swept the trade and made every rival closure obsolete. By 1882 the family had sold the bottling side to the Hayes brothers so the firm could concentrate on manufacturing.

Then William Painter's crown cap arrived and did to the Hutchinson stopper exactly what the stopper had done to everything before it: cheaper, more sanitary, quicker to apply. Rather than go down with their own patent, W. H. Hutchinson & Sons went into making crown caps, shipping them out of Chicago by the gross in wooden barrels stencilled W H HUTCHINSON & SONS CHICAGO and marked to be kept dry — because of the cork. The mark on this cap belongs to the people whose own invention the crown cap destroyed.
