Description

🧹 Antique Hudson broom label – gliding up the river every time you sweep

This antique Hudson broom label is unused NOS stock from the early 1900s and measures about 6 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide, a perfect size to frame as a small poster. In the center, a classic Hudson River steamer slides between steep, forested cliffs, trailing smoke across a soft sky, while a bold HUDSON name panel crowns the scene and an empty cartouche at the bottom once held the broom grade.

✨ When the Hudson River was a symbol of easy travel

In the first decades of the 20th century, big Hudson River excursion steamers carried crowds from New York City up to river towns and back again, turning the river into a symbol of smooth, modern travel and scenic escape. Broom makers borrowed that imagery to sell their own promise: a broom that made cleaning feel as effortless as gliding upriver on a day‑line steamer. A shopper in a hardware store would see this label and instantly think of the Hudson and its famous boats.

🎨 Baltimore lithography in full color

Along the bottom border the label reads “Made in U.S.A.” and carries a tiny printer’s slug, “U.S.P.B.L. Co., Balto.”, linking it to a Baltimore lithography firm. Early 20th‑century lithography layered separate ink colors onto the paper, which is why the greens, blues, and golds in this river scene still look so rich more than a century later. The mix of painterly landscape, ornate but clean framing, and bold type fits comfortably in the c. 1910s–1920s era—before stripped‑down Art Deco graphics started to dominate advertising posters and labels.

🏛️ From forgotten stockroom to frame‑worthy Hudson River art

Most broom labels were used once and thrown away with the broom. NOS examples survived only because a printer or broom company tucked away extra sheets instead of sending them all to the glue pot. Today, collectors, museums, and design lovers are reframing original labels like this as miniature works of art and as vivid documents of how everyday products were marketed. The Hudson River steamer theme makes this label especially appealing to anyone who loves travel history or New York State ephemera.

This antique Hudson broom label is ideal for framing in a kitchen, laundry room, broom closet, hallway, or gallery wall, and it fits beautifully into collections of Hudson River memorabilia, steamboat images, or antique advertising.

Approx. 6" x 3.5", original lithographed broom label, NOS, ready to frame, gift, or add to your ephemera collection.
