Description

🏛️ This antique “Victory” embossed cigar box label comes from the golden age of cigar advertising, printed in the 1900s–1920s by Consolidated Lithographing Corporation of Brooklyn, New York for W. C. Frutiger & Co. At about 9" x 6 1/2", it’s a large inner lid label that would have greeted customers the moment they opened a fresh box of cigars. More than a century later, the rich red and green color, deep embossing, and metallic gold still jump off the paper.

🏭 Consolidated Lithographing Corp. was one of the powerhouse New York firms that specialized in premium chromolithographed packaging—especially cigar labels and box art. Their artists built designs color by color, running each stone separately, then added heavy embossing and metallic inks to create real depth and shine. This kind of work was reserved for better brands that needed to stand out in crowded cigar shops, which is why examples like this “Victory” label are now treated as small works of advertising art.

🚬 W. C. Frutiger & Co. was a respected cigar manufacturer whose brands, bands, and labels are now cataloged by collectors. Period photographs still show the Frutiger cigar factory active into the 1930s, with boxes stacked and workers at long tables. Labels like this would have been glued under the lid, promising customers a “victory” moment before they even struck a match. Having both a documented printer and a named cigar house gives this piece a level of provenance that anonymous labels simply don’t have.

⚔️ The artwork itself is pure turn‑of‑the‑century drama. A sweeping “Victory” script stretches across a bright red panel framed by green scrollwork, laurel leaves, and elaborate gold ornament. In the vignette, a Roman gladiator stands triumphant with shield and sword, one foot planted on his fallen opponent while a crowd and classical building rise behind him. It’s a perfect visual metaphor for triumph—whether that’s winning the day in business, graduating, or hitting a personal milestone—so it still communicates instantly even for people who have never smoked a cigar.

🎨 By the 1920s, this level of multi‑stone chromolithography with deep embossing and heavy metallic ink was already fading as cigar packaging shifted to simpler, cheaper printing methods. That’s why original labels from firms like Consolidated are now in museum and gallery collections, shown as examples of a “lost” commercial art form. Every time one of these is framed for a home bar, office, or collection, that’s one fewer circulating in the wild.

🖼️ Printed on heavy stock, this label has remained bright and crisp, with strong color and well‑defined embossing that really reward framing. It looks fantastic over a bar cart, in a cigar lounge or game room, or in an office where the word Victory in big gilded letters sets exactly the right tone. Give it as a gift for a promotion or achievement, or keep it as a daily reminder that some victories are worth celebrating in gold.

📏 Approximate size: 9" x 6 1/2". Original early‑20th‑century embossed chromolithograph cigar box label—“Victory” Roman gladiator design printed by Consolidated Lithographing Corp., Brooklyn, for W. C. Frutiger & Co.—authentic antique advertising, not a modern reproduction.
