Description

✨ This antique “Signal” gold‑embossed cigar box label comes from the golden age of cigar advertising, printed in the early 1900s–1920s by American Lithographic Co., N.Y. for J. T. Stier & Son. At about 5 1/4" x 2 3/4", it’s a compact nameplate‑style label with the same rich gold, color, and craftsmanship as the larger inner lids—perfect for turning into a small framed jewel on your wall.

🏭 American Lithographic Co. (ALCO) was the powerhouse of New York chromolithography, known for producing some of the finest cigar labels of the era. Their printers layered color through multi‑stone lithography, then added embossing and metallic inks to create raised lettering and ornament that catch the light like metal. This Signal piece is classic ALCO work: a textured silver ground, heavy gold border, and bold red letters surrounded by scrolling flourishes.

🚬 J. T. Stier & Son used this design to carry the Signal brand across the box—on lids, edges, and lips—so the name stood out anywhere the box appeared in a shop or bar. Most of those labels were glued down and used up; this example comes from factory stock that was never applied, giving you a fresh, display‑ready slice of that world.

🎨 The design is simple and luxurious at the same time. SIGNAL marches across the center in tall red letters edged in gold, set against a finely textured gray background. Gold scrollwork and corner ornament frame the panel, and a small portrait medallion in a red cartouche adds a touch of formality, like a miniature coin inset into the paper. The embossing gives the whole label a sculpted feel you can see even before you touch it—one of the reasons cigar labels are now treated as little works of art rather than just packaging.

🖼️ At this size, the label is easy to mat and frame and just as easy to work into a larger display of tobacciana, advertising, or early‑20th‑century design. It looks right at home over a bar cart, in a cigar lounge or den, or tucked into a gallery wall of vintage pieces. The red and gold palette makes it a natural focal point even when surrounded by bigger items.

📏 Approximate size: 5 1/4" x 2 3/4". Original 1900s–1920s “Signal” gold‑embossed cigar label, title and design owned by J. T. Stier & Son, printed by American Lithographic Co., N.Y. on heavy embossed stock—authentic antique advertising, ready to be enjoyed and displayed.
