Born June 28, 1960 in Port Angeles, Washington, John Elway was already the consensus best college quarterback in the country by the time he finished at Stanford University — a player with the arm strength, the mobility, and the competitive instincts that made him the most anticipated NFL draft prospect in the history of the modern game. The Baltimore Colts selected him 1st overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. Elway had been drafted by the New York Yankees as a catcher, and made absolutely clear that he would choose professional baseball over playing for Baltimore, and was subsequently traded to the Denver Broncos. What he built there over the next sixteen years became one of the defining legacies in the history of the position.

Five Super Bowl appearances. Three times John Elway led Denver to the Super Bowl and faced a team that was simply better that night: Super Bowl XXI (39-20 to the New York Giants), Super Bowl XXII (42-10 to the Washington Redskins in the game where Doug Williams became the first Black starting quarterback to win a championship), Super Bowl XXIV (55-10 to the San Francisco 49ers, the most lopsided loss in Super Bowl history to that point). Three times, through no failure of Elway's, Denver went home without the ring. And then, after all of it, after everything those losses cost him, John Elway won. Super Bowl XXXII (January 25, 1998 — Broncos 31, Green Bay 24, Elway named MVP at 37 years old, the oldest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl at that time). Super Bowl XXXIII (January 31, 1999 — Broncos 34, Atlanta 19, Elway named MVP again, and then he retired on top).

47 fourth-quarter comebacks. The Drive: January 11, 1987, in Cleveland, in wind chill that approached zero, with the Broncos trailing the Browns 20-13 and 5:32 left on the clock. Elway lined up on his own 2-yard line and proceeded to take Denver 98 yards in 15 plays. The game-tying touchdown pass went to Mark Jackson with 37 seconds remaining. The Broncos won in overtime 23-20 and went to Super Bowl XXI. No single drive in the history of the franchise has been replayed more. No single series of plays has better defined what John Elway meant to Denver football.
