Description

☕ This antique Gold Cup Coffee label is a knockout piece of 1920s coffee history and design, embossed in rich gold so the big cup and lettering literally rise off the paper. Made for Gold Cup Vacuum Pack Coffee, it advertised a one‑pound bag roasted and packed by John Blaul’s Sons Co., Burlington & Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one of the Midwest’s best‑known wholesale grocers and coffee houses in the first half of the 20th century. At about 3 1/4" x 3", it is small in size but huge in presence—the sort of label that would jump off a burlap‑lined shelf in a general store.

👑 John Blaul’s Sons Co. grew out of a Mississippi River–fed wholesale grocery operation in the late 1800s and, by the 1920s, was roasting coffee, packing teas and staples under its own brands, and supplying mom‑and‑pop grocers and towns across Iowa and the upper Midwest. The Gold Cup line represented one of their higher‑grade coffees at a time when vacuum‑packing and “flavor‑sealed” packages were the cutting edge of grocery technology.

🌅 The design here leans into that idea of a cup above the rest. A big, stylized coffee cup fills the entire label, stacked on its saucer and edged in fine black hatching that makes the gold glow even more. The words GOLD CUP arc across the rim, VACUUM PACK sits just below, and the word Coffee curves in a bold script across the bowl. At the base, against a dark panel, you get the practical details: 1 LB. NET WEIGHT and “Roasted and packed by John Blaul’s Sons Co., Burlington, Iowa – Cedar Rapids, Iowa.” Held in your hand, the embossing catches the light and really does look like a little trophy cup for coffee.

📜 Coffee labels like this came from a moment when roasting houses were fiercely proud of their brands. Before supermarkets and national TV ads, companies like Blaul’s had to sell you on freshness and quality right at the counter. Vacuum‑pack tins and bags were the new promise: roasted locally, packed tight, flavor locked in until you opened it at home. The heavy gold, die‑cut cup shape, and raised lettering all say the same thing—this is the “gold standard” coffee for your family table.

🖼️ On the wall, this label makes perfect kitchen, café, or coffee‑bar décor. Frame it by itself as a little jewel of metallic art, or group it with old tins, grinders, and spoons to build a whole coffee corner. At just over three inches tall, it’s easy to fit into any display, but the gold embossing ensures it never gets lost visually.

📏 Approximate size 3 1/4" x 3". Original c. 1920s Gold Cup Vacuum Pack Coffee embossed label for a 1‑pound bag, issued by John Blaul’s Sons Co., Burlington & Cedar Rapids, Iowa—authentic early coffee‑roaster advertising, not a modern reproduction.
