Who Packed Farmers Pride Lima Beans? ๐ŸŒพ FARMERS PRIDE Brand Lima Beans Can Label, Hulman & Company, Terre Haute

Size: 11" x 4 1/4" ~ Unused.

Capture a piece of history with this Antique 1930s ๐Ÿšœ Farmers Pride Label, Indiana and Illinois, ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ Decor! Packed for Hulman & Co. out of Terre Haute, Indiana, Mattoon, Illinois, and Evansville, Indiana, it's a stunning 11 x 4 1/4 inch piece of art. ๐Ÿคฉ Pictures don't do it justice! ๐Ÿ™Œ

It's a can label that wrapped all the way around a can of lima beans, with two panels. One shows a big bowl of pale green lima beans. The other is the sweetest little scene: an old farmer in a straw hat sitting with a small girl who's hugging a black kitten. Navy and gold bands with golden wheat sprays tie them together.

ยฎ๏ธ Registration No. 186093

That trademark number on the label is the key to the whole story, and it checks out. FARMERS PRIDE was filed on October 17, 1922 and registered on July 1, 1924 as U.S. Registration No. 186,093, in the name of Hulman & Co., and the drawing on file is the same scene: FARMERS PRIDE over the farmer sitting with the little girl. The registration covered an amazing list of groceries, from spices and extracts to canned vegetables, lima beans, navy beans and kidney beans, canned fruit and fish, evaporated milk, coffee, tea and more, which tells you just how big a line Farmers Pride was for the Hulmans. They kept it renewed for decades, into the 2000s under Clabber Girl Corporation of Terre Haute, until it was finally cancelled in 2016.

๐Ÿ The Hulmans of Terre Haute

Hulman & Company goes back to 1850, when Francis T. Hulman, a German immigrant, opened a small grocery store in Terre Haute, Indiana. His brother Herman joined him in 1854, and after Francis and his family were lost in the 1858 wreck of the SS Austria, Herman carried on the business. It grew into a wholesale grocery, took the Hulman & Company name by 1884, and in 1899 started making the Clabber Girl baking powder that made it famous across the country. Then in 1945, of all things, the grocery company bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Hulmans ran the home of the Indy 500 for 74 years, until they sold Clabber Girl to B&G Foods and the Speedway to Penske in 2019. So the folks who put Farmers Pride lima beans on your grandma's shelf are the same family that ran the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
