⚾ Elly De La Cruz came out of Sabana Grande de Palenque in the Dominican Republic and arrived in the Cincinnati Reds organization with the kind of physical tools that evaluators spend careers cataloguing and almost never find in the same player at the same time: a switch-hitting shortstop who stands 6'5”, runs with the burst of a speed-position player, and generates the power output that corner-infield bats usually require to justify a roster spot. The combination does not exist in the standard template for what a shortstop is. Elly De La Cruz does not fit that template, and watching him play has reminded baseball fans that every generation occasionally produces a player who requires the template to be updated.

⚾ He made his major league debut in June 2023 and turned the Cincinnati Reds lineup into one of the most watched in the National League simply by being in it. By 2024 he had led Major League Baseball in stolen bases – the speed tool applied at the league's highest frequency against a pitching environment that the most aggressive baserunners in the game had tested. Every time he reaches base, the energy in the building changes. Every time he gets to the batter's box from the left side or the right side, the defensive alignment has to account for a threat that does not resolve itself cleanly in either direction.
