📋 What Is Printed On This Label

Every line of type on the sheet, transcribed from the label itself rather than paraphrased:

  • WISE BIRD
  • BRAND
  • WEST ORANGE CITRUS
  • GROWERS ASSOCIATION
  • WINTER GARDEN, FLORIDA

Printer: the sheet carries a lithographer's imprint. At the resolution of these photographs it reads as LOUIS ROESCH CO., LITHO., S. F., CALIF. — offered as a probable reading, not a certainty, until a flat re-scan of that corner confirms it.

Orange here is a place name. The only produce word printed on this sheet is CITRUS, and it appears inside the association's name: WEST ORANGE CITRUS GROWERS ASSOCIATION. West Orange is the western district of Orange County, Florida — the country around Winter Garden. The word ORANGE on this label is the district, not the fruit.

There is a lithographer's imprint. A single line of microtype runs along the bottom-right of the green border, well outside the printed field — a party other than the packing association. At the limit of what these photographs resolve it reads as LOUIS ROESCH CO., LITHO., S. F., CALIF., and it is offered as a probable reading only, not as a certainty. What is certain is that the association did not make this label.

The picture. A great horned owl, breast toward the viewer, perched on a bare forked branch against a large flat yellow full moon, with a rank of black conifer spires behind. The whole night field is warm sepia-brown inside a bright yellow-green border — the most distinctive thing about the sheet.
