📜 Original 1911 Cleveland Short Line Railway Company First Mortgage Gold Bond Certificate, issued during a pivotal moment in American railroad and industrial history.

🚂 The Cleveland Short Line Railway was formed on November 24, 1902, by major shareholders of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (LS&MS). Its purpose was clear and urgent: to bypass the traffic‑clogged rail corridors of downtown Cleveland and relieve mounting congestion caused by explosive industrial growth.

💥 Construction began in May 1906, and on February 24, 1910, the first 10.08‑mile section opened, connecting Rockport to the Lake Erie and Pittsburgh Railway. This new route immediately solved critical bottlenecks that had plagued freight and passenger movement through the city.

✍️ On April 1, 1911, the LS&MS signed a landmark 99‑year lease with the Cleveland Short Line Railway, agreeing to pay an annual 5% return on the company’s capital stock along with interest on its bonded debt. This bond was issued as part of that financial structure.

💵 The remaining 9.56 miles of track were completed on July 1, 1912. By December 31, 1913, the LS&MS had purchased all outstanding stock of the Cleveland Short Line, effectively absorbing the operation.

🔰 In December 1914, the LS&MS merged with the New York Central Railroad. By 1915, the Cleveland Short Line Railway was fully taken over by the NYC, ending its brief but highly effective independent existence.

🏛️ This bond represents a First Mortgage Gold Bond, a secured financial instrument backed by the physical assets of the railway. It reflects a rare moment when engineering innovation, financial strategy, and industrial necessity aligned to solve a major infrastructure problem.

📐 The certificate is a large‑format engraved document measuring approximately 15 x 10 inches, featuring detailed period engraving, ornate borders, and typography characteristic of early American railroad securities.

🕰️ This example shows standard punch cancellations. A well‑preserved example with sharp engraving and clean presentation, selected for its strong overall condition.
