Description

🚂 Antique 1893 Big Four Railroad bond – original $1,000 certificate from the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway, the famous “Big Four” route that tied together Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis in the late 1800s. Formed in 1889, the Big Four became a major Midwestern system across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio before later joining the New York Central.

🎹 “Reapers No.2” vignette by a 17‑year‑old engraver
At the top is the celebrated “Reapers No.2” scene, engraved in 1872 by G.F.C. Smillie when he was just 17: classical farm workers in the wheat fields flanked by two powerful steam locomotives. It’s the largest and most detailed of his Reapers series, and that artwork is a big reason these bonds are favorites with both railroad and engraving collectors. The tall layout, ornate border, and bold “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – 1000” at the bottom make it pop when framed.

📜 Heavy paper, real 1890s finance
Printed on sturdy security paper about 15" x 10", these bonds were meant to survive handling and filing—thicker than a dollar bill, with crisp engraving and an embossed seal that still stand out 130+ years later. Paper railroad bonds like this aren’t made anymore; they’ve been replaced by electronic records, so each surviving certificate is a one‑time snapshot of how investing and railroading used to look and feel.

🔀 Two variants to choose from

  • ✅ Bond only (no coupons) – clean display piece, just the main certificate with its decorative margin.

  • đŸŽŸïžÂ Bond with coupons attached – includes part or most of the original coupon sheet along the edge, showing the little interest “tickets” investors once clipped and redeemed.

For the couponed version: the exact number of coupons can vary slightly from bond to bond, and on some pieces the last coupon may have been taped back on – a common early 20th‑century practice. That old tape is part of the authentic use history and is normal for genuine period railroad bonds.

🔎 Details collectors love
Serial numbers, embossed company seal, cancellation punches, and signatures from officers all tell tiny pieces of the railroad’s story. Some collectors even research the signers and specific issues to trace how lines were financed and expanded, adding extra provenance to an already impressive document.

🏠 Ready to frame, easy to love
Framed in a simple mat or shadow box, this 1893 Big Four bond becomes a striking piece of wall dĂ©cor for a train room, office, library, or vintage‑themed space. Whether you choose the clean bond or the coupon‑attached version, you’re hanging up a real slice of Gilded‑Age railroad history—not a reproduction—at a price that still feels approachable.
