🍸 Herman Jansen Liqueurs Coaster, Schiedam, Holland, Anno 1777

Rare Vintage 1950s Herman Jansen Cloth Coaster, Lady Drinking Liqueur! This is a soft, absorbent scallop-edged coaster printed in blue and red, and the lady on it is having a fine time: wild blue hair, rosy cheeks and bright red lips, tipping a tiny glass of liqueur with her little finger out. Two ship's banners read SCHIEDAM and HOLLAND, ANNO 1777 sits up top in red, and a big red script Liqueurs swoops across the HERMAN JANSEN banner at the bottom.

🥃 Herman Jansen of Schiedam

The company goes back to 1777, when Pieter Jansen, Herman's great-grandfather, started a Dutch geneva distillery in Schiedam. Herman had a head for business and took it well past the Dutch borders, and in 1895 he shipped the first loads of aromatic schnapps, a Dutch jenever cousin, to Africa, America and Asia. When a supplier's bottle prices got out of hand, he simply started his own glassworks. In the 1960s and 1970s the company went into a joint venture with K. Plantinga of Bolsward, took over F.J. Sonnema and later Gorter, and merged with the Vlek & Co. distillery of Delft. The seventh generation of the Jansen family runs it today, still in Schiedam, making Dutch favorites like Sonnema Berenburg and Notaris jenever, one of the jenevers that carry Schiedam's municipal seal, along with international names like Glen Mansion Scotch whisky, Savoy Club, Tribelle triple sec and Delaforce port.

🌬️ Black Nazareth

Schiedam and jenever go way back. The world's first known commercial distillery started up there in 1575, and in the 1700s dozens of Schiedam distilleries shipped jenever all over the world. The gin trade earned the town the nickname Black Nazareth, and its windmills had to be built so tall, to catch the wind above the warehouses, that five of them, De Noord, Walvisch, Drie Koornbloemen, Nieuwe Palmboom and Vrijheid, are the highest traditional-style windmills in the world.
