There was a stretch of years, roughly 2002 to 2008, when a whole generation of kids pushed open the door of a hobby shop, a comic store, or a corner shop that had started stocking booster packs, and caught this on the glass: deep reds and oranges, Kaiba's cool silhouette on one side and Yugi's star-shaped hair blazing on the other, framed by a glowing ring of Egyptian-style glyphs, and four words that meant one thing — Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Sold Here.

🪟 What This Piece Is

This is a Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game "Sold Here" retail window cling, printed in reverse so it reads correctly through the glass from the storefront side. Read that way — the way a customer on the sidewalk would have seen it — Kaiba stands on the left with the Konami logo below him, and Yugi is on the right with a second logo below him. The cling runs 11 x 9 inches.

The text printed on it, read correctly: "Yu-Gi-Oh!™ TRADING CARD GAME SOLD HERE," and in small print, "©1996 KAZUKI TAKAHASHI." One corner carries the Konami logo — an orange-red mark, "KONAMI," a small ®. The other carries a green square logo with "ENTERTAINMENT" underneath and "UPPER DECK" running up its side — the Upper Deck Entertainment mark. That logo is the real dating clue here: Upper Deck Entertainment held the North American Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG license from the March 2002 launch until Konami took back full control at the end of 2008, so a cling carrying the Upper Deck Entertainment logo belongs to that window, 2002-2008. The 1996 date is only the copyright year on Takahashi's manga — the Trading Card Game itself didn't exist yet.

🐉 How a Manga Became the Best-Selling Card Game in History

Kazuki Takahashi started Yu-Gi-Oh! in Weekly Shōnen Jump in September 1996; before he turned to manga he had designed corporate logos, banners and pachislot panels. Old-school manga readers recall the series as one that really teetered on the edge of cancellation in its early chapters — until Takahashi introduced a fictional card game inside the story, Magic & Wizards, later known in English as Duel Monsters. Readers latched onto the dueling arcs, and Konami — a company whose roots go back to 1969, when three men, Kagemasa Kozuki, Yoshinobu Nakama and Tatsuo Miyasako, started out renting and repairing jukeboxes in Toyonaka, Osaka, before incorporating in 1973 as an arcade-game maker — built a real card game out of the fictional one.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game launched in Japan on February 4, 1999. Six months later, in August 1999, Konami held an invite-only tournament at the Tokyo Dome — more than 55,000 kids and their parents showed up anyway and overwhelmed the venue. The North American TCG followed in March 2002, through Upper Deck Entertainment, which had picked up the North American marketing rights in late 2001. In December 2008, Konami announced it was retaking full control of the TCG, and just over a year later, in December 2009, a federal court found Upper Deck liable for producing counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and dismissed Upper Deck's countersuit against Konami. By 2011, Guinness World Records had named Yu-Gi-Oh! the best-selling trading card game in history, with 25.2 billion cards sold worldwide.

✍️ Kazuki Takahashi

Takahashi was born October 4, 1961. He serialized Yu-Gi-Oh! from 1996 to 2004, and his character designs — Yugi's impossible hair, Kaiba's trench coat and cold stare — carried straight over into the anime that followed. On July 4, 2022, he died off the coast of Nago, Okinawa, while helping three people caught in a rip current. The Japan Coast Guard found him 300 meters offshore two days later. He was 60.

📜 Word Among Dealers

As the story goes among card-shop veterans, the clings and displays Konami sent out to accounts carrying the TCG weren't always plentiful — a smaller hobby shop might get a single window kit and take good care of it, which is as good an explanation as any for why pieces like this can still turn up looking like they never faced a day of sun in a window.
