Who Packed Lakecove Pears? 🍐 Lakecove Brand Lake County Mountain Bartletts, Lake Cove Growers Inc., Finley, California

Size: 10 1/2" x 8" ~ Little to no wear.

Gone fishin'! This is a vintage Lakecove Brand pear crate label, packed and shipped by Lake Cove Growers Inc. of Finley, California. A barefoot boy in a straw hat sits at the water's edge with his fishing pole out over a blue lake, with orange and blue mountains rising beyond, and in the corner a blue pear emblem over a little map of California reads "Lakes." Lakecove is lettered across the top, and LAKE COUNTY MOUNTAIN BARTLETTS runs along the bottom, all inside a dark border.

🏷️ What's Printed on It

  • Lakecove BRAND ®
  • Lakes (on the pear emblem over the California map)
  • NET CONTENTS 4/5 BUSHEL
  • PACKED & SHIPPED BY LAKE COVE GROWERS INC., FINLEY, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A.
  • LAKE COUNTY MOUNTAIN BARTLETTS

That little pear emblem dates this one. "LAKES," the pear over the map of California, was registered as a trademark for fresh pears by the Lake County Pear Association of Finley. They filed on September 25, 1964, it was registered on September 28, 1965, and the association gave its first use as August 13, 1964. So this printing came along in the mid-1960s or later. The 4/5 bushel was the standard pear box, and labels for it ran about 10 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches.

🌄 Lake County Pears

Finley sits about three and a half miles southeast of Lakeport, 1,352 feet up in the hills around Clear Lake, and its first post office opened in 1907, named for a settler, Samuel Finley Sylar. Lake County's first pears went in during the 1880s, and by 1919 there were 700 acres of pears in the county. The Bartlett itself got its American name from Enoch Bartlett, who started distributing the variety under his own name in 1812, and Bartlett trees had reached California by 1849. Lake Cove Growers packed under more than one label, too, including a Pirate's Cove brand with the same Lake County Mountain Bartletts line.

🏡 Display

Crate Labels are a reminder of a bygone era but the amazing lithography process is unparalleled even to this day in my opinion. Museums and Art Institutes have galleries dedicated to them and more and more collectors are seeking these out to preserve their history. Once the limited supply for sale is gone and on display with collectors or in galleries then they will be very difficult to acquire.

Imagine this amazing vintage advertising hanging as home decor in any room of your home instead of a museum! It's a natural for a lake cabin or a fisherman's den, and a perfect gift for anybody from Lakeport, Finley or Lake County.
