Where Was This A&W Root Beer Bottled? 🥤 Retro 2000s NOS Bottle Cap, West Jefferson NC

Size: 1 1/4"

🍺 Original NOS A&W Root Beer bottle cap from the 2000s, bottled in West Jefferson, North Carolina under the authority of Dr Pepper/Seven Up of Plano, Texas. Unused, a twist-off crown that never saw a bottle.

🔍 What's on it

The classic A&W oval in cream on root-beer brown, with a ® and "TWIST OFF →" printed around the edge. The skirt reads "…Jefferson, NC 28694 Under the Authority of Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., 5301 Legacy Drive, Plano…", and there's a small FAMOSA mark near the bottom edge - the crown maker's. Like every uncrimped crown, it measures 1 1/4 inches across.

📅 How old is it?

Three things on this little cap date it. First the Plano address: Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. moved into its new headquarters on Legacy Drive in Plano in 1998, a few years after Cadbury Schweppes bought the company in 1995, so it's no earlier than 1998. Then the lettering: this is the A&W with outlined, drop-shadowed letters, the version the logo histories date to 2007 in the United States (the flat-lettered swash A&W before it came in 1998). And the FAMOSA mark: the big crown-cap collectors' catalogue records that wordmark only on caps of the 2010s, and West Jefferson caps carrying this same authority skirt on a FAMOSA crown show up there from 2015 on - this very A&W design was in collectors' hands by January 2016. So it's a 2000s cap, and a recent one.

🏭 FAMOSA, the crown maker

FAMOSA is Fábricas Monterrey, S.A. de C.V., of Monterrey, Mexico, set up in 1929 to make crown tops for the Cuauhtémoc brewery - the Carta Blanca people. It went to Heineken with FEMSA's beer business in 2010, and Crown Holdings bought it in a deal signed in August 2014 and closed by early 2015. It still makes crowns at Monterrey, Toluca and Ensenada, which is how a cap for a little Blue Ridge bottler came out of Mexico.

🏔️ The West Jefferson bottler

The bottler is the Dr Pepper Bottling Company of West Jefferson, up in Ashe County in the Blue Ridge. H.R. Vannoy started it in 1937, Carl Colvard and Vannoy ran it through the 1940s, and the Vannoy family still owns it. These caps came out of the old plant, the two-story brick building downtown on North Third Avenue that still wears a faded "Dr. Pepper-Grapette Bottling Co." sign and is part of the West Jefferson Historic District. The company moved out to a newer plant on NC Highway 163, where it still bottles A&W and dozens of other flavors in glass longnecks with real cane sugar.

🍺 A&W, since a 1919 parade

A&W started with a parade. On June 4, 1919, Lodi, California threw a homecoming parade for its World War I veterans, and Roy Allen, who had bought a root beer recipe from an Arizona pharmacist, set up a stand on the parade route and poured his first mugs. In 1922 he went into partnership with one of his employees, Frank Wright, and they named the drink after their initials: A&W. Their stands became some of the first drive-ins in the country, with curbside service. By the time this cap was printed, A&W root beer belonged to the Dr Pepper/Seven Up family, which is why the Plano authority line is on the skirt.

📦 A solid piece for collectors of A&W, Dr Pepper–affiliated bottlers, North Carolina soda history, and late‑era American beverage packaging.
