Laurel and Hardy for the Bicentennial? 🎬 Vintage 1975 Patriotic Stickers, Larry Harmon

Size: 3 1/4" x 2"

🇺🇸 Stan and Ollie, bowler hats and all, getting the country ready for its 200th birthday. You get both stickers in this pair, printed in 1975 in red and blue, and they've never been peeled off the backing.

🔍 What's On Them

The first one says BE PROUD OF AMERICA in big stars-and-stripes letters, with Laurel's head in a blue bowler on one side and Hardy's in a red bowler on the other, their names over each, and © LARRY HARMON PICTURES CORP. running up the left edge. The second says STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER, after Sousa's march, with the boys full length, Hardy in a red suit and Laurel in blue, squared off at each other with their names underneath and © LARRY HARMON PICTURES CORP. 1975 across the top. Both are on cream stock with red and blue borders, and the backs are the plain peel-off backing.

They came from the same 1975 run of patriotic stickers as Bozo, Popeye, Dick Tracy and Yogi Bear, and collectors say they were vending machine stickers from the grocery store.

🎬 Stan and Ollie

Stan Laurel, born in Ulverston, England, and Oliver Hardy first turned up in the same picture in The Lucky Dog in 1921, but they didn't become a team until 1927, at Hal Roach Studios, with Putting Pants on Philip. They made the jump to talkies without missing a step, won an Academy Award for The Music Box in 1932, and made 107 films together. Their last was Atoll K in 1951, and they kept doing stage shows in Europe into 1954. Hardy died in 1957, and Laurel, who got an honorary Oscar for his comedy, died in 1965.

🎨 How Larry Harmon Got Them

Larry Harmon is the same fellow who made Bozo the Clown a household name. In 1961 he went to Stan Laurel and his wife Eda about an animated series, and to Hardy's widow Lucille for the rights to their likenesses. Laurel thought he was signing for an animated pilot for NBC, and Harmon ended up with a lot more than that. Hanna-Barbera made the cartoons, 156 short episodes that premiered in September 1966, with Harmon himself doing Stan's voice and Jim McGeorge doing Ollie. Harmon licensed Laurel and Hardy merchandise too, and the story goes that Laurel only found out about one of the toys, a plastic coin bank with his face on it, when a fan mailed him a picture of it. These stickers are part of that Harmon licensing.
