Who Told You to Stand Up and Salute? 🤡 Vintage 1975 Bozo the Clown Bicentennial Stickers, Larry Harmon Pictures Corp.

Size: 3 1/4" x 2"

🎪 Bozo the Clown getting the country ready for its 200th birthday. You get both stickers in this pair, two different designs, printed in 1975 as America counted down to the Bicentennial.

🇺🇸 What's On Them

The first one has Bozo's big grin and red hair popping out of the stars and stripes with STAND UP AND SALUTE across the bottom. On the second, Bozo stands in a blue suit with red trim, waving next to a flag with the thirteen stars in a circle, and it says What so proudly we hailed. . ., which is straight out of the Star-Spangled Banner. Both are marked BOZO and © LARRY HARMON PICTURES CORP. 1975, and the backs are the plain peel-off backing.

🤡 Bozo and Larry Harmon

Bozo started out in 1946 on a Capitol Records storytelling album with an illustrated read-along book. Alan W. Livingston created him and Pinto Colvig, the voice of Goofy, was the first Bozo. In 1957 Larry Harmon bought the licensing rights, renamed him "Bozo, The World's Most Famous Clown," and came up with the idea that made Bozo famous: local TV stations could put on their own Bozo show with their own Bozo. So towns all over the country had their own Bozo on the local channel, and in Chicago, WGN's Bozo's Circus ran from 1961 for more than forty years. One local Bozo went on to something bigger: Willard Scott played Bozo on WRC-TV in Washington for three years, and the show's sponsors, a pair of McDonald's franchisees, hired him to be the very first Ronald McDonald.

In 1975 Larry Harmon Pictures put both Bozo and Laurel and Hardy into the same series of patriotic stickers, alongside other favorites like Popeye and Dick Tracy. Collectors will tell you these came out of the vending machines and gumball machines at the grocery store, which is right where I'd have spent my quarters. Harmon died in 2008, and in 2021 the actor David Arquette bought the rights to Bozo.
