🖌️ The Painting Has a Name: La Buena Ventura

This print reproduces "La Buena Ventura, Spanish Treasure Frigate," a painting by Joe Duncan Gleason. The same composition - the crowned wreath, the rampant-lion sail, the Madonna-and-Child sunburst, the banners - was also published in a captioned edition signed "Duncan Gleason" in the plate and stamped "(c) L.A. Pub. Co." These 16 x 12 sheets are a separate, larger printing of the same painting, cropped a touch tighter at the bottom, without the caption or the signature line.

The galleon rides through rough teal-and-blue water under a sunset sky, three masts working together, a high castellated stern, and a row of dark gun ports along the hull — real cannon ports, not oar ports; a ship like this was sailed, not rowed. It's trimmed clean to the image on all four sides with no margin and a blank reverse, and it measures a full 16 x 12 inches — a size that drops into a standard frame without a custom cut. New old stock, never hung: this is printer's stock that simply sat in supply.

⚓ Reading the Sails

Every sail on this ship is doing double duty as heraldry. A rampant lion sweeps across one canvas in burnt orange. A crowned laurel wreath encircles a single letter G on another, and I've always liked to think that G is Gleason's own initial, folded quietly into his own composition. The most striking sail carries a glowing medallion of the Madonna and Child ringed in gold sunburst rays, and above it all fly banners quartered in red, gold and cream, a white flag bearing a plain cross, a yellow pennant, and a blue flag with a checkered canton. It's the kind of visual language — crown, faith, lion — that real ships of Spain's exploring era carried into open water, and Gleason clearly knew the vocabulary well enough to paint it convincingly.

🎨 Joe Duncan Gleason, Working Artist

Gleason was born in Watsonville, California in 1881 and died in Glendale in 1959, and he came up through engraving, not a fine-art academy alone. He was working professionally for the Union Engraving Company at fourteen, studied at USC under Lees Judson, then moved north to study at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco while earning his keep at the Sunset Engraving Company. Later still he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and, further east, under Frank DuMond at the Art Students League in New York. He illustrated for Ladies' Home Journal, Cosmopolitan and Leslie's Monthly in the 1900s and 1910s, moved to San Pedro in 1924, and turned his attention to marine painting in earnest — while also working in the art departments of MGM and Warner Bros., checking and illustrating ships for the studios. He painted for steamship lines too, including postcards for Dollar Steamship Lines and American President Lines, wrote and illustrated a book of etchings called "Windjammers" in 1922, and later published "The Islands and Ports of California" (1958) and "Sketches and Paintings from Mexico" (1963). His work hangs today in the Laguna Art Museum, he competed in the art competition at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, and he's buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale.

🖼️ A Larger, Unsigned Printing of a Published Series

L.A. Pub. Co. issued Gleason's ship paintings as a captioned series — a companion print of the USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides," carries the same publisher's imprint, so this galleon wasn't a one-off. These belong to a separate, uncaptioned printing of the galleon alone, larger than the signed edition and trimmed with no margin at all, which is exactly the kind of thing that happens to a painting popular enough to get reprinted more than once.
