Description

This Vintage 1930s Green Mountain Vermont Maple Syrup label is a little slice of maple and design history from right here in the Green Mountain State 🍁

Measuring about 3½" x 3", it was printed for Green Mountain Packing Co., Inc. of St. Albans, Vermont and would have wrapped a one‑pint bottle of syrup. Across the top you get the contents—“16 OZ. AVD.” and “12 FL. OZ.”—framing a painted mountain scene with lake and forest that stands in for the Green Mountains themselves. Below that, bold yellow‑and‑black lettering spells out “Green Mountain Pure Vermont Maple Syrup”, with a green banner at the bottom reading “Packed by Green Mountain Packing Co., Inc., St. Albans, Vt.”

🌲 St. Albans and the maple boom

By the early 20th century, Vermont had become the leading producer of maple syrup in the United States, and the 1930s saw the state formalize a grading system to standardize quality and help sell syrup across the country. St. Albans and the surrounding towns were at the heart of that story—large plants there were buying and processing millions of pounds of syrup into bottled maple, maple sugar, and blended products.

Green Mountain Packing Co. shows up in contemporaneous lists of syrup and sugar manufacturers, alongside well‑known names like Cary Maple Sugar Co. and Vermont Maid’s producers, which tells you they were a genuine player in the business, not just a tiny back‑road bottler. Labels like this were their calling card on grocery shelves far from Vermont.

🍁 Vermont’s liquid gold on paper

Today Vermont consistently produces more than half of the maple syrup made in the U.S., with recent seasons topping 2.5 million gallons of “liquid gold.” That long dominance didn’t happen by accident—labels like this one helped sell the idea of Vermont as a place of pure mountains, cold nights, steam‑filled sugarhouses, and honest farm families boiling down sap.

The little mountain painting on this label taps straight into that image: a steep, green peak, water glinting below, and a suggestion of autumn color in the foreground. It’s not just a product sticker; it’s a postcard‑sized promise that what’s inside the bottle came from a place that lives and breathes maple.
